On a per-share basis, the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company said it had profit of $1.38. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $1.43 per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.29 per share.
The electric utility posted revenue of $7.59 billion in the period, which missed Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $7.71 billion.
Duke Energy expects full-year earnings in the range of $6.55 to $6.80 per share.
